Last week in March on the eastern side of Block Island. A very slow day for fishing. Three quick tows and we were back at the dock. The herring season is over for us. The fish are swimming north.
We ate raw scallops on deck, right out of the shell. This is good for the soul. The captain’s dog slept most of the day in his bunk. A few flounder, a few skate, 10 scallops, two totes of herring. I brought some large silversides home and cooked them in a skillet. My grilfriend, Jen, said they were delicious, french fries from the sea.
We’ll be putting the gillnets on the boat this weekend. Wait for the weather to blow through, set the gear on Monday. The price of skate is very high. With a little luck the skate will be inside the 3-mile line. But early spring fishing is never a certainty: sometimes the fish are early, sometimes late.
